I was reading Wired online this morning when I came across this article:

Wired News: The Joy of Sucking

To sum things up, some researchers took 20 gamers or so, hooked them into some amazing mind-reading machine, and made them play Monkey Bowling in Super Monkey Ball 2. They measured when people experienced joy, and when people experienced frustration. Predictably, when people knocked down lots of pins, they felt joy. When they missed the pins just by a little bit (like when the monkey falls into the gutter right before he gets to the pins) they felt frustration. Interestingly, though, is that when they sucked really bad, and sent the monkey carooning off into space, they experienced joy, not frustration. They conclude that great games should make you feel good no matter if you win or lose.

I agree with this statement, but I think it should be taken a step further, beyond just video games, and into people’s everyday life. For example, they should make bread so that when you leave it too long in the toaster and it gets burnt, it should still be tasty. Maybe not as tasty as real toast, but something better then the mouth-full-of-charcoal taste we’re used to.

Or, let’s say you play the stock market, and you fail to research a company. You invest in them heavily, and then lose everything. Currently, you would feel great frustration. I think that whoever runs the stock exchange should read this study, and maybe start sending a van over to your house filled with clowns and cake, and you party for hours, forgetting about the thousands of dollars you’ve lost. It’s so easy, and would make the stock market more attractive to conservative investors like myself. It’s all about the win-win.

That’s it for now, maybe I post again soon.
